Arsenal are at somewhat of a crossroads. One road takes them in the direction of premier league glory (perhaps even more so). The other however, takes them in the direction of another disappointing ‘nearly’ season of which Arsenal fans have endured more than enough of.
Rewind to about 10 days ago when Arsenal somehow managed to surrender a 2 goals lead against a doomed Wolves team. It felt like a crushing and potentially defining moment in the season. The mood was tense to say the least. Just a few days later and Arsenal thumped their North London rivals Tottenham 4-1 in their own back year. It was truly agony to ecstasy and a prime example of how quickly things can change. There was a sense of panic that reverberated around Arsenal against Wolves eventually leading to a moment of chaos between Raya and Gabriel and a late Wolves equaliser. Despite a losing their lead just two minutes after Eberechi Eze opened the scoring against Tottenham that sense of panic did not seem to exist.
It’s easy to say ‘just chill out and play your football lads’ to a group of players who are competing at the highest level of club football where everything they do is scrutinised. However, that’s also kind of what they should do. Against Spurs, Arsenal played like a side who knew they were good without any sense of complacency. The confidence they played with should be something they take with them into the final few months of the season . The frailties they have shown in the past few weeks are so have not been completely put to bed but this performance, albeit against a very poor Spurs team, have perhaps shown that their struggles have been more mental. It will be a job for Arteta and co to not just motivate the players but also to encourage them to play with boldness in the face of extreme pressure.
